"Piano and Fiddle never sounded so good!"

Penny and Garnet are a dynamic musical duo based in Matlock, Manitoba, celebrated for their warm stage presence and decades of combined performance experience. Their shows blend classic pop, light jazz/blues, gospel, traditional fiddle music, and a rich repertoire of original songs, creating an inviting and soulful musical atmosphere for audiences of all ages.

Penny Buhr

A Winnipeg-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Penny Buhr has been performing since childhood—beginning as a church pianist at age 12 and later earning her RCM Grade 10 Piano certification. She plays fiddle, viola, guitar, accordion, and voice, and her sound spans blues/jazz, gospel, soft rock, and her signature original style.

Penny is the creator of six albums of original music and a three-time international award recipient (CGM and CGMA). She has been recognized nationally as a Top 10 finalist in the CNIB Star Search and has earned distinction as Music Teacher of the Year in both Saskatchewan and British Columbia. A certified instructor with the Music for Young Children program, she has taught piano, violin, ukulele, guitar, accordion, and voice across Western Canada.

In 2025, Penny achieved a major career milestone, winning First Place at The Manitoba Voice Competition in Portage la Prairie—an honour that highlights her outstanding vocal artistry and musicianship.

Garnet Knight

Garnet Knight, a third-generation musician from Chalet Beach near Matlock, is a former Junior Fiddling Champion and respected contest judge. He began performing in old-time fiddle competitions as a child and was working in country, bluegrass, and western swing bands by age 15.

After relocating to Calgary in 1988, Garnet spent nearly a decade performing in the city’s vibrant country-music scene and in mountain ski-resort venues. Since returning to Manitoba in 1997, he has established himself as a versatile freelance performer, currently appearing with The Spectacles, The Grant Simpson Jazz Swing Quartet, and of course, with Penny as part of their duo. He continues to teach fiddle, guitar, and mandolin while remaining active as a contest judge and mentor in the fiddle community.

Together

As Penny and Garnet, the duo brings together Penny’s award-winning vocals and multi-instrumental skill with Garnet’s expressive fiddle work and seasoned musical intuition. Their performances offer a heartfelt blend of storytelling, musicianship, and prairie-rooted charm—making them a memorable presence on stages throughout Manitoba and beyond.
